The next week became a flurry of activity for Sam. In the mornings she left for rehearsal, filling in for Becca while she recovered. In the evenings she’d come back to the lofty mansion, relieve the nurse, and watch over Becca through the night.

Becca improved, slowly. Color returned to her face, and she started to eat solid foods again. But something was wrong, some vital part of her personality seemed to have been drained away. Most nights Becca lay in bed, silently listening to music from the phone lying beside her. She rarely spoke, just pulling the blankets up over her shoulders and going back to sleep. Her hand always wrapped around the scarab.

“It’s like she’s depressed,” Sam told Reggie one morning. “I’ve never seen her like that before. She won’t come downstairs. Won’t read scripts. Refuses to see anyone. All she does is lay in bed and play with that scarab necklace I got her.”

“The necklace, again?” Reggie asked.

“Yes, the necklace again. She won’t take it off. Even when I manage to coax her into the shower she still wears that thing. But she sits there and strokes it like it’s some sort of ceramic cat to keep her company.”

“Odd. Well, at this point I’m not sure she’ll be able to come back to the set, anyway. She’s hasn’t worked with the others here, and I don’t know if she knows the lines. We can’t just have her running amok on the stage. What would that do for her reputation? For mine?”

“You don’t want to fire her, do you? She’s never been fired before. What will that do to her?”

“I’m not sure, but we can at least mitigate any damage with the press easily enough. We’ll have her doctor say she’s been under a lot of stress and has to take a break. It isn’t far from the truth.”

“And what about the part? Who will play the lead? If there isn’t enough time for Becca to get into the role then who else can learn it so quickly?” Sam asked, dread creeping up her spine even as she silently chanted to herself please don’t say me.

“Debra thinks you should audition,” Reggie started, and Sam’s heart beat faster. “But,” he continued, “to have an unknown take over when Becca has already been announced would be terrible for her reputation.”

“Good,” Sam said, relief flooding through her. “I don’t think I’m the right person at all. And I’d feel horrible taking Becca’s role from her like that.”

“Now hold on,” Reggie said, holding a hand up, “I didn’t say you shouldn’t do it. I just said it’s going to be difficult for you to take the role and keep Becca’s reputation intact.”

“Wait, you want me to do the role?” Sam said in disbelief.

“Of course I do. I hope you’ll hire me as your agent as well, but that’s up to you. Really, I’ve watched you with Debra and now that you’re getting past your shyness it’s clear you’re a natural. They’d be lucky to hire you.
